Origins of Lambley Historical Society
In the summer of 1979 the Reverend William Gull of Lambley approached the Adult Education Department of Nottingham University to set up a course on local history in the village as part of the quincentenary celebrations of the church. A local History Research Group was established initially for one year. At the end of the first year an exhibition of church and village history was held in the church to coincide with the quincentenary celebrations. The Society was established in 1980 from this Research Group and its work continues to this day. Over this period we have successfully involved the community in local history projects with special events where we have collected and recorded local people’s history and photographs. We have published two books: Lambley a Village Study and Living in Lambley – both these books can be purchased from the Society. (See Publications page) The Society Today The society is a friendly group that meets on a monthly basis. During the autumn, winter and spring months we have indoor meetings, where we invite guest speakers to give talks on a range of historical subjects with a particular focus on Nottinghamshire. During the summer months we organise visits to places of local historical interest which are sometimes not accessible to the general public. We are always pleased to see new people who wish to join the Society or non members at our talks or visits. So, if you live locally and wish to come along then please do so. You will be most welcome.
